May’s Blooming is, at its heart, a musical portrait of growth. Inspired by the image on the cover, it evokes the first blossoms of spring emerging as the morning sun rises over the horizon. Yet the work also reflects a different kind of blooming—the gradual and often unseen growth that occurs in every living thing.
This idea extends beyond nature. The journey of a musician is one of continual growth, shaped by curiosity, perseverance, and countless moments of discovery. With each new challenge comes greater confidence, artistry, and expression. May’s Blooming celebrates that journey, inviting the performer to embrace the same sense of renewal, possibility, and beauty found in the arrival of spring.

Flautists: This piece was designed to be very ab libitum, especially in the opening measures. Take your time and focus on being lyrical.
