Memorie Dolorose, translated from Italian as “Painful Memories,” is a dark and introspective work for bassoon trio that explores the weight carried by memories we might rather leave behind.

Beginning in C-sharp minor and eventually transitioning into E minor, the piece moves through a somber musical landscape that draws upon all three registers of the bassoon. The instrument’s ability to shift between warmth, melancholy, intensity, and vulnerability makes the bassoon trio particularly suited to the character of the work.

Throughout the piece, lyrical passages are balanced by moments of greater technical intensity, challenging each of the three performers both individually and as an ensemble. The voices frequently interact and overlap, requiring careful attention to balance, phrasing, and the passing of musical ideas from one player to another.

Rather than telling a specific story, Memorie Dolorose leaves the nature of those memories to the listener. The music reflects something more universal: the way painful experiences can remain with us, returning unexpectedly and changing shape over time, even as we continue to move forward.

Performance Considerations

Memorie Dolorose requires each player to move comfortably between lyrical and supporting roles throughout the ensemble. Bassoon 1 alternates between bass and tenor clef, particularly as the part moves through the instrument’s different registers.

A recurring ostinato is shared among all three bassoons over the course of the work. As this figure passes from one player to another, strive for consistency in articulation, pulse, dynamic character, and note length. The transition between players should feel seamless, allowing the ostinato to function as a continuous musical idea rather than as three separate interpretations.

Register should play an important role in shaping the character of each line. Passages in the upper register should be approached lyrically, with an expressive, singing quality and careful attention to phrasing. Lower-register writing should remain warm and connected, avoiding overly heavy articulation that could interrupt the flow of the line.

Because all three voices frequently move between foreground and supporting material, balance and listening are essential. Players should remain aware of which voice carries the primary musical idea at any given moment and allow accompanying material to support rather than compete with it.

Above all, maintain a sense of continuity throughout the work. Even during technically demanding passages, the darker and introspective character of Memorie Dolorose should remain at the center of the performance.
