Pianotude was composed in 2006–2007 as a technique-driven work for solo piano. Unlike many of my compositions, which are built around a story, image, or emotional narrative, this piece is intentionally more direct: a technical study constructed around a simple musical idea.

The title itself reflects that purpose—a combination of “piano” and “étude.”

At the center of the piece is a straightforward descending motive introduced in the right hand. Beneath it, the left hand is given a contrasting challenge: a continuously rising, arpeggiated figure that becomes a defining element throughout the work. Much of the piece develops from the interaction between these opposing gestures, with the simplicity of the primary motive providing a foundation for increasingly active technical writing.

For the performer, independence between the hands is one of the central challenges. The right-hand motive should remain clear and purposeful without being overwhelmed by the motion of the left hand. Likewise, the arpeggiated figures should remain fluid and even, supporting the larger musical shape rather than becoming purely mechanical.

Although Pianotude was conceived primarily as a technical study, technique should always serve the music. Clarity, balance, consistency, and forward motion are more important than sheer speed. Even within its étude-like character, phrases should be shaped deliberately and the relationship between the two hands should remain audible.

There is no hidden story behind Pianotude and no particular scene the listener is asked to imagine. Instead, the piece celebrates something more fundamental: the challenge—and satisfaction—of developing technique and turning a simple musical idea into something engaging to perform.

Performance Notes

Pedaling plays an important role in creating the flowing character of Pianotude. Generous use of the sustain pedal is encouraged, allowing the harmony and arpeggiated figures to resonate; however, performers should listen carefully for changes in harmony and register and clear the pedal as necessary to preserve clarity. The goal is a rich, connected sonority without allowing the texture to become muddy.

The ascending arpeggiated figures in the left hand should remain as smooth and connected as possible. Even when the technical demands increase, strive for an even touch and a continuous sense of motion rather than allowing individual notes or patterns to become overly accented.

Performers are also encouraged to approach the repeated and ostinato-like material expressively rather than mechanically. Dynamic shaping, subtle changes in intensity, and tasteful use of rallentando and accelerando can give direction to longer phrases and help the recurring patterns develop over time.

These expressive choices should feel organic rather than imposed. Allow the music to build and release naturally, using changes in dynamics, tempo, and tone to create larger musical gestures within the repeating figures.

Although Pianotude is rooted in technique, the goal is never simply to execute the notes correctly. The technical patterns provide the framework; it is the performer’s shaping of those patterns that transforms the étude into a musical statement.
